Ottoshoop is finally getting electricity

by: Abigail Batala   date: 26 January 2018

Just over 500 homes in Ottoshoop in Mahikeng Local Municipality will
soon be electrified.
Executive Mayor of Mahikeng Local Municipality, Betty Diakanyo, the
Council Speaker, Theodeus Nebe and Members of the Mayoral
Committee visited Ottoshoop last week to introduce a contractor who is
appointed to esnure that the community of Ottoshoop also benefits from
the basic services that government provides.
Bongane Khumalo of Mabone Electrical has been contracted by Eskom
to electrify 536 houses in Ottoshoop, as promised by the power untility
early last year. Eskom has held several community meetings with the
people of Ottoshoop on this need. But Mahikeng Local Municipality fast-
tracked the process of electrification by constantly engaging with Eskom.
In-between talks, however, impatience has seen residents of Ottoshoop
taking to the streets, barricading the R49 road between Mahikeng and
Zeerust because of this lack of electricity.
Mayor Diakanyo urged members of the community to use proper local
government channels such as ward councillors and ward committees to
raise their service delivery concerns.
They were also encouraged to come up with suggestions during
community meetings on how the municipality could help improve their
lives. Communities were also warned against the use of violence to raise
service delivery unhappiness.
The Mayor advised that communication had to be a two-way process.
She explained to community members that the 536 houses that were to
be electrified were a product of a second assessment by Eskom, not
because of the protest that erupted at the beginning of this month.
She promised that the municipality would continue in its endeavour to
provide citizens with services regardless of where they come from or
their social status.
