As millions of pupils laced their shoes in preparation for their first
day at school for the 2018 academic year, Local Government and
Human Settlements MEC, Galaletsang Gaolaolwe, handed over
shoes to disadvantaged learners of the rural Makgobistad Primary
School near Mahikeng.
The MEC gave a word of encouragement to learners.
“Don’t forget that education is a key to everything. You need to
utilize and use it wisely. Think about what you want to do when
you finish school and work along that dream of yours. Push hard
and never give up, education is the only thing that will free us from
poverty,” she said.
One of the teachers, Boitshoko Nkgase, expressed concern about
Grade 1 learners who were forced to share one small table due to
lack of proper furniture.
When told about an epileptic learner who had to sit on a backless
chair, MEC Gaolaolwe promised to engage the Department of
Education and Sport Development and alert them about the
situation at the school.
