Maftown comedian Vuyo Jiya debuts one-man show at home

by: Kabelo Selebogo   date: 25 May 2018

Local comedian, Vuyo Jiya, will be on stage for his “Too Unemployed ” show on the 1st of June at the Mahikeng Hotel School.
The show will also feature two supporting acts - another Mahikeng-born artist Vafa Naraghi as the MC and KwaZulu-Natal comedian, Mbali Gudazi, who is currently based in Mahikeng.
Jiya, a Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) Information Technology graduate, began his career in 2014 but officially started performing in 2015.  He was also, in that year, part of the Savanna Newcomer Showcase in Soweto.

His talent has seen him earn gigs in neighbouring countries of Lesotho and Botswana. He shared the stage with prominent comedians such as David Kau, Mashabela, Tumi Morake, Kagiso Lediga, Skhumba and Salesman.

“I felt that I have been doing numerous line-up shows in Mahikeng and the support has been very good,” said Jiya. “I feel like the people of Mahikeng deserve to know me better as a comedian.”
Department of Culture, Arts and Traditional Affairs spokesperson, Shuping Sebolecwe, said the department was encouraged by the initiative.

“This is an example of an artist who took an initiative to stage his own gig – not folding his arms, waiting for government support. He did very well at our Mahika Mahikeng Cultural Festival last year. We urge the community to support him,” said Sebolecwe.

The show will narrate his childhood personal stories and other related tales in a comic form.
Tickets can be accessed via calls or messages to 081 573 5851, or at the Mahikeng Hotel School.
