Local Government and Human Settlements MEC, Galaletsang Gaolaolwe, was one of Bokone Bophirima MECs that met residents of Madibogopan in Ratlou Local Municipality in a bid to quell down the spate of service delivery protests.
Her visit comes after residents of Madibogopan complained about an abandoned and incomplete housing project.
Residents also complained about the state of roads in the area. According to one community leader, Thabo Makhoana, residents have not received feedback from the municipality despite numerous complaints.
MEC Gaolaolwe responded by explaining that the department had to terminate the contract of the service provider appointed to build 50 housing units due to poor service delivery.
“The department pays a contractor per milestone and the company only managed to build 17 houses out of 50. A new contractor has been appointed to build the remaining 33 houses and complete the remaining 17.
She said the department has already started a process to recoup the money paid to the previous contractor.
The MEC assured community members that all pending housing projects would be investigated as pronounced during the State of the Province Address by former Premier Supra Mahumapelo in February this year. She added that the department was working on a strategy to fast-track housing backlogs in the entire province.
