Do well in Grade 12 and score a Motsepe Foundation bursary

Thirty learners who perform excellently in their matric examinations in Bojanala District Municipality may find themselves studying in tertiary institutions without any financial worries.

The Motsepe Foundation has committed to awarding bursaries to these learners - 10 each for Mmakau, Madibeng Local Municipality and Moretele Local Municipality - to students whose marks will show outstanding performance come matric results time.

Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Motsepe Foundation, Dr Precious Motsepe, said the Foundation was not only looking at assisting individual learners, but was also looking at the possibility of partnering with schools that produce top achievers.

"We have approached the department to assist us with identifying top performers in the matric examinations. We are going to partner with secondary schools in order for those top performing schools to share experiences with poor performing schools. We are going to improve their infrastructure so that learners can get quality education," said Dr Motsepe.

She met Bokone Bophirima's MEC for Education and Sport Development, Sello Lehari at the Bojanala District Municipality offices last week to discuss this. MEC Lehari expressed excitement at the news.

"We are very happy about the pronouncement made by the Motsepe Foundation. The President of the Republic of South Africa once highlighted that "education is a societal matter". It is true that it takes a village to raise a child. We are going to support the Foundation to make sure that all their plans are achieved. We are also going to request their support in sporting activities. The Foundation’s experience in sport could come in handy for our young people," the MEC said.

It is not the first time the Motsepe Foundation lent a hand in ensuring top performing learners are supported financially in the province. The Foundation has already awarded 90 bursaries to learners of the province since 1999. The Motsepe Foundation has committed R500 000 to assist learners across the country who do well in their final matric examinations.
